"Every Home Workshop Should Have One" 2010-01-30
By Thomas P. Casillo (Buffalo, NY)
I was a little concerned about the quality of the kit because of the price. I use to work on aircraft avionics equipment and used numerous pieces of high end test equipment. I can honestly say this kit by Extech rivales some of the more expensive test meters on the market. Obviously, if you are calibrating delicate electronics to extreme tolerances, you need high priced equipment. However, if you are troubleshooting electrical problems in your home or car, you don't need super high end equipment. This kit provides a multitude of accessories and the meter itself has some neat options. I especially like the backlighting on the meter. How many times have you been working in an area without optimal lighting and can't see the meter face well enough? Anyway, I give this kit two thumbs up. I am very pleased.

 "Great product" 2009-11-02
By W. Moy
This is an excellent product. I purchased it to measure EMF levels around a new home that I was considering purchasing. The home was fairly close to high voltage transmission lines and I wanted to make sure that there were no elevated levels in and around the house. I actually found no unusual EMF levels around the house. Just to make sure the meter actually worked I walked right under the power lines and the EMF level spiked. I may have been a little paranoid but I wanted to have the peace of mind that my family will be safe in the house. We decided to buy the house. :)

"Very good multimeter, great feature set for the price" 2010-04-25
By Norm Ally Wright (Central NJ)
I've had this meter for a bit over a year now and am very happy with it. It has a good number of features along with the temperature probe which is a nice bonus. Have used on quite a bit of items. House, Auto, Computers, even some standard batteries that got mixed up. Only reason I didn't give this meter 5-stars is because it didn't come with any alligator clips. As a couple others commented, the meter does fluctuate and skip around a bit using the normal straight contact tipped wires until you get your hand steady and have it on good contact sites. However this is due from just getting a good connection not really the meter itself. I highly suggest buying a set of alligator clips if you have this or plan to buy this multimeter. It totally solved / stopped the contact issues and I get a fast solid reading every time I use it using the alligator clips. Yes Fluke brand multimeter s are considered the best ones out there, but you can definitely save some money and be more then satisfied with this unit.

 "Great so far" 2007-03-19
By Dale A. Meyn (Fredericksburg VA USA)
This meter does all I want and need, and does it well. I can't check the absolute accuracy of such things as volts, ohms, etc, for lack of standards, but all seems good based on previous measurements with other instruments. All the functions work, it easy to use, seems well made.

"Good instrument, short sensor lead" 2010-06-04
By PooBear (USA)
It works great, so far, and is very responsive. In a changing environment it seems to update every second or two. I haven't tried calibration yet, as the device seems to agree with my other hygrometers right out of the box for now. Those unfortunately do not have the tethered sensor this Extech has that I need for measuring moisture behind walls in an older house I am helping remodel. It would be nice if the sensor lead were longer for such work, but its getting the job done ok.

Its way better than the hygrometer used by one of my contractors, who WAS using a NIST certified "Control Company model 4154" (he is now "borrowing" my Extech). It had a longer lead but produced crazy results. I showed him where this Extech has an adjustable control to calibrate the hygrometer, but we couldn't find one one his "Control Company" one. His had a "lab calibration" sticker across the device's front and back side, to discourage you from opening it up. He ignored it and opened his up to try and recalibrate it, but there was absolutely no control inside whatsoever to control calibration. The calibration sticker was protecting nothing! LOL! So watch out what you buy, that your hygrometers are capable of calibration. Just because one has a NIST certificate doesn't mean that you can somehow calibrate it. You can get this Extech with a NIST certificate if you want to, but its more expensive (about $155 for this Extech model). All it does is say some lab person made sure the reading were correct.

One other thing about digital hygrometers. I checked a local Home Depot and they don't carry these with the tethered sensor (in my area at least), but a customer there who suggested this Extech from Amazon (thank you!) told me that there are some cheap hygrometers on the market that are calibrated with salt paint on the sensor and have no calibration knob or screw at all. These go out of calibration when exposed to high humidity for a period of time as the salts dissolve and run from the sensor.

Anyway, from what I've seen, if it doesn't have a calibration knob, screw, or whatever, don't buy it. This Extech has one, and comes with instructions how to calibrate it if you ever want to.

I'd definitely recommend this Extech. It rocks :)

"Higher price and fewer features than similar designs" 2008-04-23
By HMMWV (santa clara, CA USA)
Like the Elenco ST74 ST74 AC Line Splitter, this product has a X1 and X10 current loop transformer and a line / neutral banana jack for measuring voltage.

You can read my review on the ST74 for the advantage of having a X10 loop to use with your meter, but this design lacks some desirable features found on the ST74.

I should point out that both products insist on hanging from the outlet supplying power. This is fine for a new, high quality outlet, but often problems happen with old, worn out jacks that barely grip a heavy cord. Remember that the outlet must support both these devices and the weight of your amp clamp.

The missing features here are:

1 - there is no banana jack for "EARTH/GROUND". Since outlets can be miswired, or have an open earth connection, this is an important line to be able to probe safely. The ST74 has this jack

2 - the output jack to your appliance is ONLY for the US standard. This is fine most of the time, but on the rare chance you need to test a foreign plug, the "UNIVERSAL" jack on the ST74 will let you plug almost any power cord into it.

3 - Finally the ST-74 costs a little less. I do think this is better built than the ST-74, but that's just from "feel" of the product. Both products "hang" off the power outlet you put them into and lack a 6" or 12" power cord, which would be nice to accommodate inconveniently located outlets or outlets that won't support the extra weight of a current transformer + amp clamp. I would give this 4 stars if it had a power cord and 5 stars if it had a ground jack as well as the line and neutral. I've seen too many worn out power outlets that won't hold onto an adapter plus an amp clamp.

If you don't care to measure ground impedance, don't think you'll ever work on foreign power cord devices, and have some more money, then its fine for you. But the ST-74 still does more for less and is a better value.

"My need to purchase a clamp on ammeter." 2010-01-31
By James B. Channell (Jackson, TN)
My need to purchase a clamp on ammeter arose from having to remove the battery terminal on my Lincoln car in order to check for excessive drain on the battery. The removal of the battery terminal on this vehicle required you to retrain the car for certian functions.
The meter that I chose offered an LCD display, a large range of current, and a clamp on feature. Additional features, that I was not aware of before purchase, include a backlit display, a current hold button, and an AC voltage detector. I like the fact that the unit detects both AC and DC currents and has wide range of measurement.
The price was acceptable for the unit and the delivery of the product was timely. Overall I am pleased with this purchase.

 "Accurate for cooking" 2009-01-01
By GBSmith (CA USA)
I use the unit in the making of high heat confections. Modern microwave units do not have a high temperature sensor (300 degree) making accurate and predictable results unreliable. To get accurate readings from the unit, I remove the pyrex container from the microwave, point the Extech at the center of the mixture and know the exact temperature instantly. It is a good little unit that delivers on accuracy and convenience.
