"Good instrument, short sensor lead" 2010-06-04
By PooBear (USA)
It works great, so far, and is very responsive. In a changing environment it seems to update every second or two. I haven't tried calibration yet, as the device seems to agree with my other hygrometers right out of the box for now. Those unfortunately do not have the tethered sensor this Extech has that I need for measuring moisture behind walls in an older house I am helping remodel. It would be nice if the sensor lead were longer for such work, but its getting the job done ok.
Its way better than the hygrometer used by one of my contractors, who WAS using a NIST certified "Control Company model 4154" (he is now "borrowing" my Extech). It had a longer lead but produced crazy results. I showed him where this Extech has an adjustable control to calibrate the hygrometer, but we couldn't find one one his "Control Company" one. His had a "lab calibration" sticker across the device's front and back side, to discourage you from opening it up. He ignored it and opened his up to try and recalibrate it, but there was absolutely no control inside whatsoever to control calibration. The calibration sticker was protecting nothing! LOL! So watch out what you buy, that your hygrometers are capable of calibration. Just because one has a NIST certificate doesn't mean that you can somehow calibrate it. You can get this Extech with a NIST certificate if you want to, but its more expensive (about $155 for this Extech model). All it does is say some lab person made sure the reading were correct.
One other thing about digital hygrometers. I checked a local Home Depot and they don't carry these with the tethered sensor (in my area at least), but a customer there who suggested this Extech from Amazon (thank you!) told me that there are some cheap hygrometers on the market that are calibrated with salt paint on the sensor and have no calibration knob or screw at all. These go out of calibration when exposed to high humidity for a period of time as the salts dissolve and run from the sensor.
Anyway, from what I've seen, if it doesn't have a calibration knob, screw, or whatever, don't buy it. This Extech has one, and comes with instructions how to calibrate it if you ever want to.
I'd definitely recommend this Extech. It rocks :)
