"Another Great Book by Walkenbach" 2010-06-09
By Randolph Eck (Pennsylvannia)
For the past couple of versions of Excel, I have always used John Walkenbach's books for learning and reference. His books provide quiet a complete reference for Excel users and this book is no exception. This edition contains forty-five chapters covering all aspects of Excel. I pretty much read through the entire book in order to familiarize myself with the latest features of Excel 2007.

This version is a significant upgrade to the previous versions. The biggest change is the ribbon bar. Yes, it is something new to learn, but once you become familiar with this, you will probably find that this really is a much better idea.

Walkenbach covers all aspects of Excel in his books such as:
1. Formulas and functions
2. Charts
3. Graphic objects
4. Advanced features such as data validation, number formats, sharing data, etc.
5. Analyzing data with pivot tables, what-if analysis, goal seeker and solver
6. A whole section (seven chapters) on VBA programming

His book also contains appendixes covering worksheet functions, Excel resources and Excel shortcut keys. Included also with the book is a CD-ROM containing the complete text of the book. But, what I really like about the included CD-ROM are the sample files. Sample files are included for each chapter. You can load them into your Excel directory and access them as you read the chapters and practice what you are learning thereby not just reading but getting hands on experience.

Yes, I know at this point in time, you can now order Office 2010 and Walkenbach has released his book on Excel 2010, but I would say that, based on my experience with Walkenbach's previous versions this review would probably also apply to the 2010 version I'm sure. Of course, many people will not be using Office 2010 for some time to come, such as myself, so I decided to write this review anyway for those who will be using Excel 2007 for the near future.

 "An excellent resource" 2010-06-26
By Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA)
I've been an Office user for many, many years, but Microsoft keeps adding what they consider to be features and with Office 2007, they changed the User Interface.

The Missing Manuals series are generally excellent, so I bought all of the volumes available covering Office 2007 for use as references when I needed them.

As it happens, with Office 2010 just becoming available, I needed a reference to Excel 2007 immediately - and my volume of Excel 2007:The Missing Manual was at hand.

Lifesaver. I needed a crash course in Pivot Tables and that is precisely what I got. More than enough to carry me through the basics in a flash.

I also had to review the book's treatment of Excel functions. I was trying to do some data manipulation. Normally I would just write a program to do this, but this project was a bit bigger and I wanted to take care of all that needed to be done in a single app.

The first seven chapters deal with the basics and then some of spreadsheets. For beginners, this is must-read material. More experienced users will probably be okay with just skimming it. The next 21 chapters bring the reader deeper and deeper into Excel's very great capabilities. This is not one of those books where the reader is constantly told that the subject at hand is beyond the scope of the book. The author's provide very substantial detail, but their writing style is crisp and clear, free of pedantry, It is actually pleasant to read, despite being a technical manual.

As I said, this book has been sitting on the shelf, having been purchased as a reference for the moment I would need an authoritative education on some aspect of Excel 2007 in a hurry.

Thanks to being well researched, well written and amply supplied with illustrations and examples, the book saved me.

What more can you ask?

Jerry

"Virus on CD - Can't Access Files" 2009-11-20
By Brian in San Antonio (San Antonio, TX)
When I went to access the CD to copy off the e-book and example files, McAfee flagged the CD as having a virus (I don't remember which one) and blocked access to the file. I noticed one other recent comment about the same issue so I suspect multiple copies of the book have the problem. I have contacted the publisher to see if I can get access to the files another way. If not, I will contact Amazon about returning the book.

Used a previous version of the book and learned several great time saving tips. As a result, getting the bad CD was a bummer.

 "I love this book" 2010-07-10
By Seneca
I felt very excited about what I learned in this book, and excitement was certainly the last thing on my mind when I decided I needed to learn Excel. The instruction is top-notch. It's very helpful to have the files to download and practice on. And the end-of-chapter self-tests allow you to see where you need review.

I have done other Excel classes, one all-day workshop through a top university and one extremely long online class through Element K. I learned significantly more from this book and it felt effortless.

"Very useful book for financial analysis." 2010-03-26
By FC (Los Angeles, USA)
When I just started my career as a financial analyst, a project manager gave me a pile of condensed training materials which included the excel functions that I would be using most frequently. I bought this Data Analysis & Modeling book 2-3 weeks after my first day of work and I found many of those taught in the book aligned with those on the training materials from my manager. The book has been very useful to me as it has a lot of cases to demonstrate how those functions can be applied.

This book is a book teaching MS Excel, but shaped in a way that focuses more on functions that are useful to financial analysis. It won't make you a financial expert after reading the book -- you need to know the financial concepts like fixed / variable cost, NPV & IRR, stocks & options first, then the tools introduced in the book will help you organize, calculate or present your data.

Pros:
- Clear step by step explanation
- Lots of examples & Exercises included in CD.

 "The Ultimate Power-User Book" 2010-03-25
By Michael T. Ellis (Chicago, IL USA)
Every once in a while a technical book comes along which strikes the perfect balance between "technical detail", "practical application", and "vision". I am, like many people who buy self-help style technical books (as opposed to full out college textbooks), a self declared power-user. Power users are folks who need to get stuff down; not much time for parsing minute details and theoretical concepts. We look for ways to make our day-to-day business tasks more automated. If you're self employed like me, you're very business existence depends on automation.

This book is special for 3 reasons:

1) Practicality of advanced topics:
As a power-user, when was the last time you found yourself seriously looking at c programming, ADO, and SQL? The authors give us real life uses for these sorts of things, in a very focused manner. You walk away with an excellent understanding of why and when to use these things (notice I didn't say thorough understanding. The authors wisely admit that's someone else job, and point you in the right direction), based on what you're trying to accomplish.

2) Relevance of good programming practices:
Most books on programming teach "good programming practice" as if you are going to be working in an enterprise environment, with a team of engineers and professors. That's fine but in reality power-users work under deadlines and completely alone. No one cares how well you comment your code. As long as the thing works, when you want it too, then you've programmed enough. The authors explain a concept called "Interfacing" in a way that makes "good programming" a very practical time investment. I know "Interfacing" is not a new concept (as none of the topics in this book are). Its all in how the authors connect the dots. The relationship of concepts is far more important than the concept itself.

3) You want to know more:
Usually that's a bad thing, but not in this case because you know why. 90% of technical authors write some form of a dictionary, sprinkled with examples. But the end goal of a program is automation (or at least it should be), whether its iTunes or VBA. Take a repetitious task and automate it. Power-users don't have the luxury of slogging through a dictionary. If I spend time learning an advanced technical topic, there must be clear, reasonably obtainable objectives. The authors accomplish this by a lot. This is a tech book that really sheds light on the usefulness of all those seemingly unuseful-to-you type topics that have spawned so many 1300 page books.

If you've hung with me this far, you might have noticed I don't talk about Excel. That's because this book really isn't about Excel. Excel acts mostly as a cloths-line, linking various topics, methods, and recommendations. The authors tell us at the beginning, Excel is an excellent platform for fast application development and prototyping. THAT's really what the book is about.

It's too bad books aren't written this way more often. Hope this review was helpful
